About a year ago, more than 15,000 people were killed by a series of disasters triggered by the Tohoku earthquake. Japan Airlines (JAL) has participated and organized many events and campaigns to rebuild the Tohoku region, which includes operating 2,700 special flights to the region in the 5 months after the earthquake. March 11 2012 marks the first anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake, and JAL will operate a special "Tohoku Reconstruction Charter Flight" from Hong Kong (HKG) to Sendai (SDJ).

Japan Airlines (JAL) will operate a bunch of charter flights to Palau throughout the year. Some of the seats on these flights will be available for JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) award redemptions. However, it has to be an roundtrip award ticket departing from Japan. You can't originate from Palau.

Reservation starts on June 9/July1/Aug 1/Sept 1 8am JST depending on your flight. it costs 40,000 miles for a Economy class roundtrip award. No waitlisting, no change, and no web check-in. Fuel surcharge is JPY 8000 (USD92) one-way. And of course you need to pay other taxes and fees too (USD 35).

Japan Airlines (JAL) is once again cooperating with JTB this summer to develop new destinations for Japanese tourists. This summer, JAL and JTB are planning 14 charter flights to various destinations in Europe and all of the flights will be operated by 747-400 with 356-372 seats.

Narita Airport is currently extending its runway B to 2500m long, which will then allow heavy aircrafts to takeoff and land on the runway. Japan Airlines' charter flight departs at 07:00 to Hakodate will be the first heavy plane to use the extended runway, which is scheduled to open on October 22.
