JAL to roll out JAL SKY Wi-Fi from July 15 2012

Japan Airlines (JAL) announces the roll out schedule of its inflight wi-fi service "JAL SKY Wi-Fi". As expected, the launch route will be Tokyo Narita (NRT) - New York JFK (JFK) (JL005/006). The service will progressively rolled out to the rest of the 777-300ER routes in JAL international network.

Roll Out Schedule

From July 15 2012
JL005/006 (NRT-JFK) on alternate days (Jul 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, Aug 2, 4)

From August 5 2012
Daily on JL005/006 (NRT-JFK)

From end of August 2012
Progressively roll out to Chicago (JL009/010) and Los Angeles (JL061/062) routes

From October 10 2012
Daily on NRT-ORD (JL009/010) and NRT-LAX (JL061/062)

From December 29 2012
Daily on Jakarta flights (JL725/726)

From Spring 2013
Roll out to 777-300ER flights to London Heathrow (JL401/402), Paris CDG (JL405/406) and Frankfurt (JL407/408)

As usual, the schedule is subject to change and service availability depends on aircraft used. You can check JAL SKY Wi-Fi website after 18:00 JST on the day before departure to see if the scheduled aircraft has changed.

Service Charge
The inflight wi-fi service is available on all four cabins on JAL 777-300ER but there will be a service charge involved. The fee which is payable only by credit card is only USD 11.95 for one hour of usage and USD 21.95 for 24 hours upon activation. JAL CARD, JAL USA CARD, and JAL Shanghai Pudong Development Bank credit card holders can enjoy a special rate of USD 10.75 and USD 19.75 for 1 hour and 24 hour usage respectively. If you selected the 24 hour option, you can continue to use the wi-fi service on your connecting flight within the time limit if it is also JAL SKY Wi-Fi enabled.

Free Trial
JAL will conduct a limited time free trial between Jul 15 and Sep 30 2012 to promote this inflight wi-fi service. Passengers flying First and Executive class can enjoy an 1 hour complimentary JAL SKY Wi-Fi service. According to the press release, it looks like you will have to request for the access code from the cabin attendants.

As announced before, JAL has selected the Panasonic eXConnect technology. This means all you need is a wi-fi enabled device and a credit card to enjoy this service. For more details, you can refer to JAL Press Release (Japanese, English)
