Japan Airlines (JAL) has long been a supporter of the Japan Olympics. Of course JAL will sign up as the official partner to support Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. From now till the host city is announced on September 7 2013, JAL will be promoting Tokyo as the 2020 games candidate city in various ways.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has been supporting the Pink Ribbon Campaign to raise the awareness of breast cancer early detection and treatment since 2004. Every year during the breast cancer awareness month in October, JAL operates something called the "Pink Scarf Flight" domestically to help launch the campaign appeal in Japan and this year is no different.

In case you have missed this, Japan Airlines (JAL) has added the COP10 logo to its Eco-Jet since June 13 2010. This is to show JAL's support to the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity to be held in Aichi, Nagoya in October and to raise awareness for the event and its motto of “Life in Harmony, into the future". Now JAL has decided to add the COP10 logo on more planes.

Japan Airlines (JAL) was recognized as an "Eco-First" company by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOE). The Eco-First Program was established in April 2008 to encourage companies to preserve the environment and to be in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol. The Dark Side was awarded this title in December 2008. So JAL is more than two years behind :(

It's this time of the year again. 2010 JAL Scholarship Program is accepting applications. This year's theme is "Tourism and cross-cultural understanding". Selected recipients will be awarded an all included 17-day trip to Tokyo and participated in this cultural exchange program.

A twitter in Japan enquired both Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways about donating miles for Haiti relief on January 24 2010. JAL and ANA gave him two completely different answers. Below are the responses translated to English to the best of my (I meant google's) knowledge.

Japan Airlines has started a campaign for Haiti earthquake relief. The "Haiti Earthquake Children Support - Miles for UNICEF" will run from January 26 - February 28 2010. JAL Mileage Bank members can donate their miles to support the campaign. Miles are donated in the units of 10,000 and for each mile, JAL will donate 1 yen to UNICEF who will use the money to help children of Haiti. JMB Japan members can login to JAL website (www.jal.co.jp) while members from other regions should contact their local JMB centers. This is a great and meaningful way to spend your expiring miles. Of course, you can always donate the UNICEF directly.

Condé Nast Traveler (a travel magazine) has awarded Japan Airlines the World Savers Award in the airline category. This newly added category is to recognize the most socially responsible airlines.

Japan Airlines will be joining Japan's eco-point system starting July 1 2009. Consumers in Japan will be able to use their eco-point to exchange for JAL travel certificates.

UPR stands for User Preferred Route, which means each flight is free to choose its own route to fly to the destination instead of using the fixed routes set by the air traffic controllers (ATC). JAL currently conduct trails for flights between Japan and Hawaii (Narita-Honolulu, Narita-Kona, Osaka-Honolulu, and Nagoya-Honolulu). Starting from June 4 2009, it will extends the trial to flights between Narita and Brisbane and Sydney.

For the forth year, JAL will support the "Inner Mongolia Greening Project Against Desertification" organized by OISCA International through its "JAL Miles for Eco" mileage drive. Between June 1 2009 and July 31 2009, JMB members can donate their mileage in units of 10,000 miles. JAL will contribute 1 yen per mile donated by its members. JMB Japan members can make donations through the special website (link won't work until June 1) while members from other region has to contact their regional JMB call centers.
