JAL formed a loyalty program partnership with online retailer Amazon

Japan Airlines (JAL) announced today that it has reached an agreement with online retailer amazon to form a loyalty program partnership. JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) members will be able to redeem Amazon gift cards with their JMB miles. And the lucky members from the Japan region will also be able to earn miles while shopping on Amazon.co.jp.

Earning Miles on Amazon
JMB members in the Japan region will be able to start earning miles when shopping on Amazon.co.jp and its sister site Javari.jp from late May 2013. Members will need to go through JMB Mall on JAL website to place the orders in order earn the miles. You will earn 1 JMB miles for every 200 yen spent on eligible purchases. Amazon points will also be earned on eligible purchase. In other words, you will be able to triple dip by earning Amazon points, JMB Mall shopping miles and JAL Card miles.

Redeeming Miles for Amazon Gift Cards
Those who don't live in Japan aren't completely left out this time. You will be able to start redeeming Amazon Gift Cards with your hard earned JMB miles from mid April 2013. You will be able to use the gift cards to shop on Amazon.co.jp and its sister website Javari.jp. You can convert in increment of 10,000 JMB miles at 1:1 miles to yen ratio.

This redemption service will be expanded progressively into Amazon websites in other regions including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France and China.

The exact launch dates are to be confirmed. JAL will make the announcements on its website later. For more details, you can refer to JAL Press Release (Japanese, English)

It's not bad if you have some expiring miles that you don't have any use for. But it would be nice if JAL could expand the JMB Mall into other regions. Not that I shop frequently online but every miles count especially not that the Upgrade Points are gone :P
