All Nippon Airways (ANA) has announced its latest inflight service enhancement in the premium cabins which will be rolled out in September. The new menus will be designed by a group of renowned chefs and beverage specialists. New bedding including one for Business Class will be added too. Sounds familiar? Seems like ANA is trying to match the offerings from its rival as these are exactly what Japan Airlines (JAL) did with its New Sky Project.

THE CONNOISSEURS

ANA has formed a team of inflight catering workforce called THE CONNOISSEURS which consists of 10 renowned chefs, 5 beverage specialists and 9 of ANA's in-house chefs. They will be redesigning the inflight catering to be offered from September on both domestic and international flights.

Between September and November 2013, chef Yoshikazu Tsuji from Kaiseki Tsujitome will be in charge of the new Japanese First Class menu on flights from Tokyo Narita to North America and Europe with desserts from PIERRE HERMÉ Paris. Business Class passengers on flights from Tokyo Narita to Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Delhi, Mumbai, and from Tokyo Haneda/Narita to Beijing, Singapore, and Hong Kong can also enjoy the desserts from PIERRE HERMÉ Paris. Chef Sadatoshi Nakata from Yugawara Sekiyou will be in charge of the new Japanese breakfast menu from Tokyo Haneda to Bangkok and Singapore. During October, flights from Tokyo Narita to China will also get a special Chinese menu designed by chef Yuji Wakiya from Wakiya.

Other than these, the other menus will continued to be designed by the ANA chefs. The domestic Premium Class menus will also be collaborating with some local restaurants as well and you can find more information with pictures from the Japanese press release.

Looks like the focus of the renowned chefs are on the Japanese menus, which is different from JAL BEDD SKY AUBERGE, which mainly focuses on the Western menus.

New Bedding on Long-Haul Flights

ANA will renew the bedding used in First Class bedding provided by Nishikawa Sangyo. It will come with a AiR mattress, Angel Float pillow, ultra-light comforters made from Teijin fibers, blankets made with cashmere and Tenerita's organic cotton, and double-sided knitted loungewear.

ANA will also be offering mattress pad in Business Class for the first time. This is another move to match service JAL offered in its JAL SKY SUITE Business Class seat. The mattress pad is also made by Nishikawa Sangyo. The Air Cyclone mattress can also be used as a seat cushion. It also comes with a Bodyline Quilts comforter and a structural pillow too.

These new beddings will be offered on flights between Japan and North America (except for Honolulu) and Europe. And the Business Class bedding will only be offered on flights with ANA BUSINESS STAGGERED seats only.

Although not mentioned in the press release, I believe ANA will continue to provide sleepwear in Business Class. This is something that JAL does not provide.

Business Class Amenity Kit

ANA will finally be offering a real amenity kit with a pouch in its Business Class between Japan and North America (except for Honolulu) and Europe. The new kit will contains products from L'OCCITANE including
  • L'OCCITANE Fabulous Serum 5ml
  • L'OCCITANE Ultra-Rich Lip Balm Stick 2g
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste, eye mask, earplugs, tissues and cotton pads.
Although the pouch doesn't look fancy at all, it is still a step up from the current offering, which the cabin attendants hand out the amenities and have the passenger grab whatever they need. Let's see if JAL will be matching this as well.

New Livery

Other than the above service improvement, ANA will also be tweaking its livery a little bit. A new "Inspiration of JAPAN" tagline will be featured on all ANA planes with the first one being rolled out in late August. It will also add the national flag of Japan in the front of the fuselage. For comparison, below is the current livery.
